Universal Newsreel Volume 3, Release 102 Part DETROIT LOCAL

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. RUIN AND DESOLATION FOLLOW IN WAKE OF MIDNIGHT TORNADO: CAMDEN, AR - At least one dead, scores injured, and property damage of $750,000 is the estimated toll of this tragic storm. Sweeping from the south, skirting northern Louisiana, the wind dips over this city cutting from its path the entire business section. The $75,000 Ouachita Court House is left a total wreck. Rescuers dig into the tangled mass, formerly two and three story buildings, seeking missing persons. Trees are uprooted, church steeples toppled, and homes torn to bits by the terrible blast. 2. MONSTER RED ARMY IN MIGHTY ARRAY ON SOVIET ANNIVERSARY: MOSCOW, USSR - In the greatest display of military strength in Soviet history, 40,000 armed men and women, and a million workers parade past the tomb of Nikolai Lenin. The ceremony, in honor of the 14th birthday of the Bolshevik revolt, is climaxed by the procession, led across Red Square by Klementi E. Voroshilov, War Commissar, and reviewed by Joseph Stalin, the dictator of the government. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 3. NEWHALL, CA - Violent snow-storm blankets West Coast! — Unprecedented fall startles natives — “very unusual.” 4. NEW YORK, NY - New $586,000 fire-boat accepted by city! — Most powerful craft of its kind in the world passes difficult tests. 5. CHARLESTOWN, MA - Rescued aviators brought to port! — Puerto Rico fliers saved after 9 hours in open sea. 6. KING PRESIDES AT NAVAL ACADEMY’S GOLDEN JUBILEE: LEGHORN, ITALY - King Victor Emmanuel, Crown Prince Humbert, and the seven sons of the House of Savoy review the nation’s future admirals on the 50th birthday of the country’s sea school. The young salts, who will someday command the battleships of Italy, perform for the royal gathering in impressive style. The celebration is climaxed by launching of the Pola, the last of ten cruisers the country can build under the terms of the Washington Navy pact. 7. 200 ENTRIES FEATURE FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF TWINS: SAN DIEGO, CA - Competing for honors in this unusual and unique contest are young and old from every section of the globe. Alike as peas in a hundred pods, they roam over Balboa Park and parade before the judges of the gathering. Joan and June Barber, just 10 weeks old, win the honors as the youngest present, and to Elizabeth and Phyliss Hofflund go the laurels for the most beautiful. Confounded by the abundance of resemblance, the spectators are too upset to question the awards. 8. DEVOUT THOUSANDS STRUGGLE TO PRAY ON NATIONAL SAINT’S DAY: GUADALUPE, MEXICO - More than 500,000 persons make the pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Virgin of Tepeyac, in one of the most impressive religious demonstrations in the country’s history. People from all parts of the nation, and many from the United States, trudge along the tiresome way to the basilica, erected on the site where, tradition says, the patron saint appeared to Juan Diego four hundred years ago. Police line the road, carefully watching for anti-clerical forces, but the feast is celebrated without mishap, except for the hundreds treated for bruises in the terrific crush. (LOCAL – DETROIT) CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR.
